Keeping the lights on in rural Spain: what the grid covers and what is yours
In rural Spain the boundary between the grid and the property is a legal line as much as an electrical one: the distributor answers for the network up to a defined point, and everything beyond it is the owner's. A backup set for a rural property is sized by working out exactly where that line sits and what the private side actually needs.
The Spanish system separates the companies that own the wires from the companies that sell the energy. The distribuidora maintains the network, reads the smart meter and answers for faults on its side; the comercializadora sends the bill. For a rural property that distinction matters most at the moment something goes wrong, because the rights, the deadlines and the reconnection procedures all sit on one side of a line that the owner is expected to know. Where does the distributor's responsibility end?
At the delivery point, in general at the meter or at the boundary device defined in the connection documents. Upstream of it, faults, capacity and supply quality belong to the distributor, and complaints follow a regulated path with deadlines. Downstream of it, the installation is private: its condition, its protection and its adequacy are the owner's, and the distributor has no obligation to make good what the private side cannot take. For a rural property the line matters because the network upstream may be thin, long and slow to repair, while the installation downstream may be older than anyone remembers.
How do outages and reconnections work in rural areas?
Slowly, and by procedure. A fault on a long rural feeder can take longer to locate than the same fault in a town, and reconnection after a disconnection or a fault follows documented steps with their own timelines. The consumer's rights during that process, including complaint routes and compensation thresholds, are regulated rather than negotiated, which is why knowing the procedure matters more than knowing a phone number. Where outages are frequent or long, the question stops being whether the grid will return and becomes what the property needs until it does.
Everything downstream of the delivery point is private. The distributor's network can be perfect and the property still dark if its own installation is at fault, and the reverse is equally true.
What load does a backup set need to cover?
The same disciplined list any standby installation starts from. Water first where the property depends on a pump, then heating or cooling controls, refrigeration, lighting and communications. The sizing arithmetic is identical to the method set out in the sizing worksheet: running loads added, the largest motor's starting demand checked, a rating chosen against step acceptance rather than against the sum of nameplates. Putting the private side in order
The checklist is unglamorous. Confirm the private installation's condition and its protection, decide which circuits the set will feed, arrange the transfer so generator and grid can never meet, and size fuel storage for the realistic outage length rather than the hopeful one. None of this replaces the distributor's obligations. It accepts them for what they are: a regulated service on one side of a line, and a private responsibility on the other. The property that knows where the line runs is the one that stays lit.
Contracted power and the private installation
The Spanish bill itemises a contracted power figure, the potencia, which caps what the installation may draw, and the private wiring, protection and certificate behind the meter all have to match it. A rural property that wants to add a backup circuit or upgrade its supply starts with that document chain: what is contracted, what the private installation is certified for, and which party must act on which side of the delivery point. Self-consumption adds a second boundary for properties with solar. The rural owner's practical task is to know the route exists before needing it: which document to cite, which deadline applies, and where an unanswered complaint goes next.
