Shangchai Generator Sets

SDEC blocks cover roughly 100 to 1,100 kVA, the band where most industrial standby and prime installations sit. This page maps the older 135 series and the newer SC series to their output ladders, and works through the duty classes, the cooling limits and the service points that follow.

Shanghai Diesel Engine Company, universally shortened to SDEC and usually written Shangchai on a genset data plate, is part of the SAIC group and supplies engines across the mid range of the generating set market. Its blocks appear at roughly 100 to 1,100 kVA, which covers the great majority of industrial standby and prime installations without ever reaching the megawatt-class V-block market.

Two naming conventions coexist on these engines, and both still appear in the field. The older 135 series carries codes such as G128 and C6121. The newer SC series carries codes such as SC7H, SC13G and SC33W, where the number approximates the displacement in litres and the final letter marks the application family.

The output ladder

The G128 covers roughly 100 to 150 kVA and remains widely serviced. The C6121 sits at about 200 to 280 kVA and is one of the most common blocks in this class anywhere. The SC series then climbs in reasonably even steps: SC13G at roughly 300 to 450 kVA, SC15G at about 450 to 550 kVA, SC25G at roughly 600 to 750 kVA, SC27G at about 800 to 900 kVA, and SC33W at roughly 1,000 to 1,100 kVA.

Duty classes these sets are rated for

Sets on these blocks are commonly offered with both a standby and a prime rating, and the gap between them is typically the usual 9 to 10 per cent. Some are also offered with a continuous rating for base-load work, which is a much harder duty and a much lower number. The distinction is not academic. A block quoted at 500 kVA standby, 455 kVA prime and 410 kVA continuous is one machine with three legitimate figures, and the wrong one on a purchase order is a warranty argument waiting to happen.

Three numbers, one machine

Standby allows a limited number of hours per year on a variable load. Prime allows unlimited hours on a variable load with an average load factor around 70 per cent. Continuous allows unlimited hours at a constant load. Write the class next to the kVA figure on every document, from enquiry to acceptance.

Turbocharging, cooling and installation

Everything above about 150 kVA in this range is turbocharged, and the larger blocks are charge air cooled. Radiator packages are the norm, sized for an ambient of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius depending on the build. The number to check before installing in a hot plant room is the radiator's rated ambient capability, not the engine's, because on most sets it is the cooling package that limits the installation first.

Room ventilation follows from the same figure. A 750 kVA set rejects a large volume of hot air through the radiator, and if the discharge path is restricted or recirculates back to the intake, the set will alarm on coolant temperature during its first real load run. Service points and the fuel side

Filters, coolant chemistry and valve clearance follow the published schedule for the engine family, and the calendar limit will usually govern on a standby machine. The recurring field problem on sets in this band is the fuel side: base tanks filled at commissioning and then left, water separators never drained, and a first real load run three years later that blocks a filter in twenty minutes.
